Listed below are some of the current issues that the committee will work on in the coming year:

1. Election Process/Forums

Provide information to members and the general public if any elections are held in 2012 (minority provincial government could make this a possibility).

2. Budgets and Official Plans for City and County
The Committee studies the Budgets of the County and City of Sarnia Councils.   Review population growth discrepancies.

3. Province of Ontario Accessibility Act:

The regulations and standards of this act will significantly affect members. The committee will work with partners to comment on the standards and provide resources to our membership preparing for the act and implementation.

4. Tax Reform and Insurance Premiums (possible issues here for Ontario Chamber of Commerce policy)
Learn more about property tax reform by the Ontario government and get involved! Explore competition for MPAC as well questioning their unqualified assessors and appraisers.

5. Emerging Local Issues Monthly

The committee will participate, gather information and provide input to the Board or the community on emerging local issues. Recent examples have been the efforts to advance a more positive image for our community, policing, art, smart use of public assets/people by municipalities, cost of  tiered  municipality levels, economic development issues where it is not the purview of the economic policy committee etc.

6.  Studied Various Ont. and Canadian Chamber Proposals and Policies as pertinent

This is an on-going item each year but does deserve some greater attention and process developed including Red Tape which could include water rates.

Provincial Requirement to Administer to prove Accountability

Study impact of accountability requirements of a dedicated administrative resource to monitor government programs specifically the over reporting and excessive regulations that impacts front line workers.  What is the administrator’s role here? Review Ontario’s “Open for Business” Strategy.

Infrastructure Impact on Businesses
Business is hurt when infrastructure work occurs in the area of their business location. Continue to monitor efforts of past committee work that helps mitigate the impact.  Address any new or emerging issues annually.  Best to speak to City/County in January concerning this.

Agriculture/Supply Chain

Stay informed concerning the issues facing Agriculture and the concern over the supply chain.

Discrepancy between Public and Private Sector

Study the discrepancies between the public and private sector in service delivery and wages.
