What We Do
Border Crossing - Transportation
Getting customers and goods to the doors of Lambton County businesses is a concern of the Transportation Committee. The committee lobbies for staff and money to support timely access creating continued economic growth for existing and new businesses.
Health Care Professionals Recruitment
The Sarnia Lambton Taskforce on Healthcare Worker Recruitment is no longer a Chamber Committee. The Taskforce is now a 'not for profit' corporation. Please visit their web site at www.doctors4sarnialambton.com.
Taxation and Assessment
We have campaigned for an equalizing and fair application of the ratio of tax paid by commercial and industrial businesses. Local government is encouraged to operate services that are needed and that we can afford. No new municipal taxes should be introduced. We want senior governments to revenue share with municipalities and not continually increase property taxes to pay for expensive infrastructure replacements.
Tourism Sarnia Lambton (TSL)
The Chamber is a founding partner of this new free standing tourism body. Chamber continues to support tourism initiatives as a funding partner of Tourism Sarnia Lambton. We participate on the Board of TSL on behalf of many tourism industry members, and those who rely on the residual dollars created by tourism to help their businesses flourish.
Energy and Power Supply
We have educated business on the open markets for gas and electricity. Lobbied for co-generation opportunities in Sarnia Lambton. Provided face to face meeting opportunities with Hydro One President to improve area power supply and reliability.
Highway 40
Our Transportation Committee has been lobbying for 4 lanes from Modeland Rd. to Indian Rd. Due to the types of products transported through the mentioned corridor, safety is a real issue. Our economic development depends on a quick redevelopment of Highway 40.
Education Leadership on workforce skills needed by small business is a focus of the Chamber. Partnering with the S.L.T.B., the small business needs are identified and planning for the future has begun.
Queen's Park
In cooperation with local business and political leaders the Chamber of Commerce took our local issues to many different Ministers at Queen's Park. We met with Officials from the Ministries of : *Transportation * Health and Long Term Care * Energy, Science & Technology * Tourism * Environment * Labour * Economic Development & Trade * Municipal Affairs * Training, Colleges and Universities * Red Tape * Super Build and Finance. Currently we are planning a RoadTrip04 to address similar issues at Queen's Park in October. To find out more please visit RoadTrip04.
Downtown Sarnia
We facilitated a focus group of businesses. Downtown is an emerging economic benefit to our region, and the Chamber has helped this business group to help themselves.
